Shroeder “Inky” Bowden Killett, our beloved family member and friend, passed away on June 20, 2024, at her home surrounded by her family after a well-fought battle with cancer. Inky, age 65, was born to James and Esther Mae Williams in Goldsboro, NC on November 23, 1958.
Inky grew up in Goldsboro, NC with her 5 siblings. She was educated in Wayne County Public Schools and graduated from Eastern Wayne High School in 1976. While at Eastern Wayne High, she was one of the women’s basketball team’s star players. In 1976, she married Jimmy Bowden, a fellow Eastern Wayne "Warrior," and they made their home in Germany for several years. During their union, they were blessed with two wonderful children, Curtis and Ebony. Despite remarrying, Inky and Jimmy continued to come together to celebrate and cherish moments with their children and grandchildren.
In 1990, Inky met Randy J. Killett, her lifelong love. They married in 2007 and settled in Goldsboro, NC, where they were longtime residents. Inky dedicated over 30 years to Wayne Community College, retiring in 2018 as a respected and highly admired mail clerk. She forged lasting friendships and earned praise from colleagues and superiors, including the college president, for her dedication. Working alongside her aunt, Bertha Holmes, was a cherished highlight of her career at the college.
Inky adored her family, always staying in close touch with them. She cherished special moments with Randy at the beach or simply outdoors under their carport. She enjoyed chatting with neighbors, visiting family, and speaking with her children. Every day, she eagerly waited to hear about what was going on at work and funny tales about the grandkids. Inky was an avid watcher of "The Voice," expressing disappointment when her favorite contestant was voted off and always keeping Curtis and Ebony updated on upcoming weather for their travels.
Photo documenting was another passion; she meticulously archived family moments in numerous albums. Despite battling cancer and limited arm mobility, Inky's love for drawing persisted. She created exquisite flower drawings, sharing them with the caring staff at Duke Women’s Cancer Care as a token of gratitude for their exceptional care and support throughout her treatment journey.
Inky was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers, Ricky Holmes, James Williams, Jr., Dennis Williams, and Randy Williams.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Randy Killett of Goldsboro, NC; her son, Curtis T. Bowden of Woodbridge, VA; her daughter, Ebony B. Cogdell (Brandon) of Columbia, MD; her two grandsons, Langston Cogdell and Miles Cogdell of Columbia, MD, her sister, Bertha “Punkin” Jackson of High Point, NC, and a host of loving nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws, and friends.
Inky's life exemplified selflessness, strength, and faith, demonstrating resilience in the face of life's challenges. Her unwavering dedication to her children and ability to find joy in everyday moments inspire us. She taught us the power of love and connection, showing that kindness and courage can illuminate paths through adversity. Although we will miss Inky dearly, her acceptance of Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior should help to comfort our hearts.
Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with their heart and soul, there is no such thing as separation.
