In profound sorrow, the Britt Funeral Home and Cremation Service join with the Edwards, Ruffin, Waters, Suggs and Sutton families to announce Mr. Sylvestera “Leroy” Sutton, age 89, of La Grange, North Carolina has completed his earthly journey. 

He was lovingly known by his family members and friends as “Leroy”. 

Mr. Sutton transitioned from labor to reward, October 22, 2023 at Harmony Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kinston, North Carolina. 

Leroy was born in Lenoir County, North Carolina, June 26, 1934, to the late Mr. Annias Sutton and Mrs. Gracey Edwards-Sutton.

Leroy received his education in the Lenoir County Public School System.

After graduation, Mr. Sutton served his country by enlisting into the United States Army in 1955.  After Mr. Sutton’s military service, he was honorably separated from the United States Army. 

During his employment years, Mr. Leroy served as a Maintenance Engineer for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in Washington, DC.

During his Christian walk in life, he was a faithful member of The Greater Tried Stone Baptist Church in Washington, DC.

Mr. Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Annias Sutton and Mrs. Gracey Edwards-Sutton; his brothers, Mr. Elijah Sutton and Mr. Hubert Sutton; his brothers-in-law, Mr. James Ruffin and Mr. Claude Suggs.

A public visitation will be held Friday, October 27, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. in the Britt Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, 414 East Washington Street, La Grange, North Carolina 28551. 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, October 27, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. in the Britt Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, 414 East Washington Street, La Grange, North Carolina 28551. Reverend, Dr. Harold O. Warren will officiate. 

Interment has been scheduled, Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at 10:00 AM by the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 164 Longs Plant Farm Road, Goldsboro, North Carolina 27534.

Leroy leaves to cherish his loving and precious memories to his son, Mr. Ray Allen Darden and wife, Ida  of Jersey City, New Jersey; his sisters, Mrs. Verna S. Ruffin of La Grange, North Carolina, Mrs. Clara Suggs of La Grange, North Carolina and Mrs. Jean Waters and husband, Nathaniel of La Grange, North Carolina; his brothers, Mr. James Sutton and wife, Irene of La Grange, North Carolina and Mr. Harold Sutton and wife, Dorothy of Roper, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Angela, Andre, Anthony, Arlene and Allen Ray; ten great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

Friday, October 27, 2023, the family members and friends will assemble at the residence of Mrs. Verna Bell Ruffin, 208 South Carey Street, La Grange, North Carolina at 10:10 a.m. in preparation for the funeral procession to Britt Funeral Home Memorial Chapel.
