Ms. Gertrude "Chyann" Southerland

The Britt Funeral Home and Cremation Service join with the Southerland Family to announce the passing of Ms. Gertrude "Chyann" Southerland, of La Grange, North Carolina.  She was lovingly known by her family members and friends as “Chyann.”

Ms. Southerland, age 60, transitioned from labor to reward on Saturday, October 12, 2019 in UNC Lenoir Health Care Center in Kinston, North Carolina.

She was born in Lenoir County, North County on February 8, 1959 to the late Mr. Wesley Johnson and Mrs. Edna Johnson.

Chyann received some of her education in the Lenoir County Public School System.  

During Ms. Southerland working years, she served as a Laborer for the Crews’ Farming Company. 

Ms. Chyann was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Wesley Johnson and Mrs. Edna Johnson; her sister, Ms. Annie Veronica Southerland. 

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. in the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 209 Carey Street, La Grange, North Carolina.  Rev. Dr. Michael A. Johnson, Pastor will officiate. 

Interment will follow the celebration of life service in the Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery, 295 West James Street, La Grange, North Carolina. 

Also, a public viewing will be conducted on Friday, October 18, 2019 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Britt Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, 414 East Washington Street, La Grange, North Carolina 28551. 

Sister Chyann leaves to cherish her loving and precious memories to her brothers, Deacon Wilbert H. Southerland, Jr. and wife, Angela of Hyattsville, Maryland and Mr. Thomas E. Southerland whom she affectionately called "BABY"  and  (Alicia) of the home; her sister, Ms. Annie S. Croom whom she affectionately called "Sis" of Lagrange, North Carolina; her nieces, Mrs. Deborah W. Washington and husband, Joseph of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, Ms. Tawanda Southerland and Mrs. Melody S. Williams and husband, Leonard of Maryland; her nephews, Mr. Antonio L. Southerland of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania  (whom she helped raise) and Mr. Michael P. Southerland of Maryland; her great nieces, Ulaysha and Anjolina, (Terrelle); her great nephews, Tevin, Terek Marcus, Jared, Stanley, Michael, Stephen, Peyton; her great-great nephews, Eric, Makai and Terrelle Jr.; her special childhood sister/friends Irene P. Davis, Mamie R. Dawson, Sandra Prince, Donnie Randolph and Willie Langston; a host of special cousins, other relatives and many, many friends.

On Saturday, October 19, 2019, the family members and friends will assemble at the residence of Ms. Annie Croom, 606 Firetower Road, Apt. E, La Grange, North Carolina at 11:50 a.m. in preparation for the funeral procession.
