In profound sorrow, the Britt Funeral Home and Cremation Service join with the Walker Family to announce that Mr. Melvin Joe Lewis Walker, Sr. of Goldsboro, North Carolina, at age 81, has completed his earthly journey.
He was lovingly known by his family members and friends as “Joe Lewis.”
Mr. Walker transitioned from labor to reward on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 in route to the Wayne UNC Health Care Center in Goldsboro, North Carolina.
He was born in Wayne County, North Carolina on June 23, 1938 to the late Mr. Johnnie Pete Walker and Mrs. Reather Bryant-Walker.
Joe Lewis received his education in the Wayne County Public School System. He attended Central High School and graduated in the Class of 1959.
In his younger years, Joe Lewis joined Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend C. C. Cotton, in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Faithfully, he served as a member of the choir, usher board and trustee board until his health declined.
Also, Brother Walker served his community as a member of the Best Grove Masonic Lodge #392 and the C. A. Whitehead Consicery #188 in Goldsboro, North Carolina.
During his working years, he was employed as a truck driver and shipping clerk with Dillon Industrial Equipment Company in Goldsboro, North Carolina.
Later in life, Mr. Joe Lewis meet, dated and married the love of his life, the lovely, Mrs. Dorothy Edwards Walker. To this special union, five children were born.
Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Johnnie Pete Walker and Mrs. Reather Bryant-Walker; one sister; two brothers; his daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Walker Simms; his great grandchild, baby Amiya B. Yelverton.
A celebration of life service will be conducted on Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, 4460 US 13 North, Goldsboro, North Carolina 27534. Pastor Larry M. Johnson will officiate.
Interment will follow the celebration of life service in the Wayne Memorial Park Cemetery-South, 2925 US 117 South, Dudley, North Carolina 28333.
Also, a public viewing will be held on Monday, August 26, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, 4460 US 13 North, Goldsboro, North Carolina 27534.
Mr. Walker leaves a legacy of love and memories to his wife, of 61 years, Mrs. Dorothy Edwards Walker of the home; his daughters, Ms. Miriam P. Walker and Mrs. Dixie R. Barnes and husband, Gary; his sons, Mr. Melvin Joe Lewis Walker, II and wife, Laura and Mr. John K. Walker; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; his sister, Mrs. Eva W. Coor; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
On Tuesday, August 27, 2019, the family members and friends will assemble at the residence of Mrs. Dorothy Walker, 104 Beverly Drive, Goldsboro, North Carolina 27534 at 9:45 a.m. in preparation for the funeral procession.
