In profound sorrow, Britt Funeral Home and Cremation Service join with the Fleming, Lovitt, Wooten and Wilkes families to announce Mrs. Thelma Marie Lovitt Wilkes of La Grange, North Carolina, age 85, has completed her earthly journey.
Mrs. Wilkes transitioned from labor to reward, Saturday, October 28, 2023 at Signature HealthCARE of Kinston in Kinston, North Carolina.
Mrs. Thelma Marie Lovitt Wilkes was lovingly known by her family members and friends as “Mama”. Thelma was born November 12, 1937 in Wayne County, North Carolina to the late Mr. Otis Lee Lovitt, Sr. and Mrs. Cora Fleming Lovitt.
She received part of her education in Wayne County Public School System.
During her earthly walk, she loved coastal fishing, growing flowers and cooking. Two ”special dishes” Mrs. Thelma loved to cook were fish stew and chicken pastry.
During Sister Thelma’s christian walk in life, she joined Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in La Grange, North Carolina, during the 90’s.
Mrs. Wilkes was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Otis Lee Lovitt, Sr. and Mrs. Cora Fleming Lovitt; her sons, Mr. Matthew Wilkes, Jr. and Mr. Willie Andrew Wilkes; her daughter, Ms. Janice Marie Wilkes; her brothers, Mr. Otis Lee Lovitt, Jr., Mr. John Robert Lovitt and Mr. James E. Lovitt and her sisters, Mrs. Janice King and Ms. Joyce Lovitt.
A public visitation will be held Saturday, November 4, 2023 from 12:00 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. in Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 209 South Carey Street, La Grange, North Carolina 28551.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. in Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 209 South Carey Street, La Grange, North Carolina 28551. Reverend, Dr. Michael A. Johnson will officiate.
Interment will follow the Celebration of Life Service in Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery, 295 West King Street, La Grange, North Carolina 28551.
Mrs. Wilkes leaves to cherish her loving and precious memories to her daughters, Mrs. Rosemary Wilkes Holmes of Durham, North Carolina and Mrs. Carolyn Wilkes
Wooten of Goldsboro, North Carolina; her sons, Mr. William Henry Wilkes and wife, Mrs. Rita of La Grange, North Carolina and Mr. Otis James Wilkes and wife, Mrs. Leslie of Kinston, North Carolina; her daughter-in- law, Mrs. Bonita Best Wilkes of La Grange, North Carolina; her sister, Ms. Mary Ethel Lovitt of Kinston, North Carolina; her brother, Mr. William Harold Lovitt of New York; her sisters- in-law, Ms. Sandra Lovitt and Ms. Ida Lovitt both of Greenville, North Carolina; her brother- in-law, Mr. Calvin King of Grimesland, North Carolina; seventeen grandchildren; twenty great-grand children; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Saturday, November 4, 2023, the family members and friends will assemble at the residence of Mrs. Carolyn Wilkes Wooten, 235 Powell Road, Goldsboro, North Carolina at 11:30 a.m. in preparation for the funeral procession to the church.
