In profound sorrow, the Britt Funeral Home and Cremation Service join with the Bynum, Gardner, Burton, Bizzell and Toomer families to announce Mother Julia Bizzell Toomer, age 95 and formerly of La Grange, North Carolina has completed her earthly journey. 

She was lovingly known by her family members and friends as “Mother Julia”. 

Mother Toomer transitioned from labor to reward, September 22, 2022, at the Montefiore Medical Center in The Bronx, New York. 

Julia was born in Lenoir County, North Carolina, April 18, 1927, to the late Mr. Ardee Bizzell and Mrs. Cora Bynum-Bizzell.

She received some of her education in the Lenoir County Public School System. 

In search of better opportunities, Julia moved to New York City.  During her employment years, she served as a Health Care Technician for The Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, New York.

During Mother Toomer’s spiritual up bring, she was an active member of the Friendly Baptist Church in Bronx, New York.  Mother Julia served as an active member of the Senior Choir and The Building Fund Ministry.

Mother Julia was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Ardee Bizzell and Mrs. Cora Bynum-Bizzell; her husband, Mr. Henry “PeeWee” Toomer; her siblings, Mrs. Carol Bizzell Gillette; and her brother, Mr. Ardee Bizzell, Jr.

A public visitation will be held, Saturday, October 8, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. in the Liberty Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 2704 Hwy 903 North,  La Grange, North Carolina 28551.

Also, a Celebration of Life Service will be held, Saturday, October 8, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. in the Liberty Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 2704 Hwy 903 North,  La Grange, North Carolina 28551.   Reverend Dr. Harold O. Warren will officiate.

Interment will follow the Celebration of Life Service in the Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery, 295 West James Street, La Grange, North Carolina.

Mother Julia leaves to cherish her sweet and precious memories to her loving and devoted daughter, Reverend Grace Gardner; her son-in law, Mr. Wheeler Gardner; her sister, Ms. Joyce Bizzell; her grandchildren, Mr. Derrick Gardner, Mrs. Hope Gardner Stallings and husband,  Mr. Kenneth, Mr. David Gardner; her great granddaughter, Ms. Nia Stallings; her adopted granddaughter, Mrs. Pamela Burton, and husband, Mr. Rory; her godchild; Mrs. Lorraine Kenney Henderson; a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, church family members, friends and neighbors. We will miss her smile, laughter, honesty and straight forward personality.

Saturday, October 8, 2022, the family members and friends will assemble at Britt Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 414 East Washington Street, La Grange, North Carolina 28551, at 10:30 a.m., in preparation for the funeral procession to the Liberty Grove Missionary Baptist Church in La Grange, North Carolina.

Floral arrangements may be delivered to Britt Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 414 East Washington Street, La Grange, North Carolina beginning Friday morning, October 7, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
