In profound sorrow, the Britt Funeral Home and Cremation Service join with the Davis, Bizzell, Toomer and Gardner families to announce Deacon Wheeler Edwards Gardner of High Point, North Carolina, age 79, has completed his earthly journey.  Deacon Gardner transitioned from labor to reward Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at his residence in High Point, North Carolina.  He was lovingly known by his family members and friends as “Deacon Wheeler”. 

Wheeler was born in Lenoir County, North Carolina, May 6, 1943, to the late Mr. George D. Gardner and Mrs. Betty Davis-Gardner.

He received some of his education in the Lenoir County Public School System.  

Mr. Wheeler graduated from Frink High School in the Class of 1962 in Lenoir County, North Carolina.

Deacon Wheeler was an aspiring singer.  He was one of the founders of the trio, known as, “The Bob Wheels”.

During Mr. Gardner’s working years, he worked as a Master Dietitian for the New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

During his Christian journey, Deacon Wheeler accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior in the late 1970s and faithfully served on the Usher Board, Choir and as Senior Deacon at Bronx Deliverance Center of Faith Church in New York. 

During Mr. Gardner’s dating years, he met, dated and married the former Ms. Grace Bizzell on December 31, 1963.

Deacon Wheeler was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. George Gardner and Mrs. Betty Davis-Gardner and his Mother-In-Law, Mrs. Julia Bizzell Toomer.

A public visitation will be held Saturday, April 8, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. in the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 209 Carey Street, La Grange, North Carolina 28551. 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, April 8, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. in the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 209 Carey Street, La Grange, North Carolina 28551.   Assistance Pastor Vera Cooper will officiate. 

Interment will follow the Celebration of Life Service in the Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery, 295 West King Street, La Grange, North Carolina 28551.

Deacon Wheeler leaves a legacy of love and precious memories to his wife, of the home, Pastor Grace Gardner; his children, Mr. Derrick Gardner, Mrs. Hope Stallings and husband, Mr. Kenneth and Mr. David Gardner; his granddaughters, Ms. Nia Stallings and Ms. Victoria Stallings; his goddaughter, Minister Pamela Burton and husband, Mr. Rory; his brothers, Mr. Lindell Gardner and Mr. Richard Gardner and wife, Mrs. Kim; his sisters, Ms. Geraldine Gardner, Ms. Sara Lee Gardner and Mrs. Elizabeth Washington; his sisters-in-law, Mrs. Gwendolyn Gardner and Mrs. Anna Gardner; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, friends and The Bronx Deliverance Center of Faith Church family.

Saturday, April 8, 2023, the family members and friends will assemble at Britt Funeral Home, 414 East Washington Street, La Grange, North Carolina at 11:10 a.m. in preparation for the funeral procession to the church.
